Heart Start For Gisborne CFA

Lifesaving defibrillators are now stowed on all Gisborne CFA fire appliances thanks to support from the Gisborne & District Community Bank Branch.

Lt Peter Harry said the potentially lifesaving devices were purchased following a grant of $11,000 from the bank in support of the CFA’s role in the local community.

“We are thrilled to receive this grant from the Bendigo Bank which directly aids our community. Many of our members are trained to offer First Aid if required, so having ready access to an automated external defibrillator (AED) could literally make the difference between life and death” he said.

About 20,000 Australians die from cardiac arrest each year and the chance of survival decreases every minute that defibrillation is delayed.

Gisborne & District Community Bank Branch Manager Jason Chuck said the grant was for a very worthwhile cause.

“We are very excited to be supporting the Gisborne Fire Brigade with the defibrillators with this our largest sponsorship for the year. We feel that it is a worthwhile cause that can make an impact within our community”.

24 community groups shared almost $27,000 in grants and sponsorship across the Gisborne district.

The bank dedicates 80% of its profit directly back to the community via grants every year.

The Community bank has handed out over $108K since opening in November 2008.
